Fallen FDNY Firefighter's Son Throws Out First Pitch Before Mets' Wild-Card Game
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Tens of thousands of Mets fans were on their feet as the son of a fallen NYPD firefighter threw out the first pitch before Wednesday night's Wild-Card game.
CBS2's Tony Aiello reports the Mets honored FDNY Deputy Chief Michael Fahy before the game against the Giants. Fahy was killed in the line of duty last week in a house explosion in the Bronx.
Fahy's wife and three kids were at the game as Michael Jr. brought down the house when he threw out the first pitch.
"Nice moment, beautiful," said fan Greg Packer.
Afterwards, the crowd of 44,747 were as fired up as any the ballpark has ever hosted, but unfortunately went home unhappy after the Mets lost 3-0 to the Giants.
The Flushing faithful included Alana and Charlie from Garden City.
"I think the Mets are still gonna win," they said.
Just as everyone expected, it was a pitcher's duel between two aces – Madison Bumgarner and Noah Syndergaard. The Met known as "Thor" didn't give up a hit until the sixth inning.
"It's nervewracking as a big fan of the team, but pretty exciting as a baseball fan," said Adam Stein.
Fans not fortunate enough to score tickets watched outside the stadium.
Fans cheered as the Mets got out of a jam in the eighth inning.
"That's playoff baseball. It is what it is. Win or go home. Winner keeps playing, loser goes home. Let's go," one fan said.
However, in the top of the ninth inning, Mets closer Jeurys Familia gave up a three-run homer to Conor Gillaspie, which was the difference in the game.
The Giants will face the Chicago Cubs in the National League Division Series.
