Subway Rider Slashed Repeatedly On Northbound A Train, Police Say

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are searching for a suspect who they said slashed a man repeatedly on the subway when he tried to stop a fight in the middle of the afternoon.

It happened just after 3 p.m. Thursday on a northbound A train at the 34th Street and 8th Avenue subway stop.

Investigators said the suspect was originally yelling and cursing at a female passenger when the victim, a 42-year-old man, stepped in, CBS2's Andrea Grymes reported.

Police said he suggested the suspect get off the train or go to another car. That's when the suspect stepped on the victim's foot and then slashed him on the left side of his chest, his forehead, shoulder and arm, according to police.

The suspect fled the train when it arrived at the 42nd Street and 8th Avenue stop in Times Square. The victim was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.

The incident left some straphangers on edge.

"Scary. I ride the A train and I didn't even know that happened," one woman told Grymes. "It is disturbing. It's shocking."

"I'm about to get on that same train right now, so it's crazy," another man said. "Just the other day, someone was yelling at someone else and I stepped in, too."

Police have released surveillance video of the suspect.

They describe him as a 30-year-old black man, between 6' and 6'2" tall and weighing between 171 and 185 pounds with a thin build and black dreadlocks. He was last seen wearing a baseball hat, white sneakers, a stripped shirt and dark blue jeans.
