NYPD: Police Shoot Armed Man Inside Queens Housing Development

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Members of the NYPD shot an armed man inside a housing development in Queens on Friday night, police said.

A plainclothes lieutenant and an officer were patrolling inside the Baisley Housing Development on Guy R. Brewer Boulevard around 9:20 p.m.

As they left the second-floor stairwell, they encountered a man holding a gun, police said.

Both the lieutenant and officer fired their weapons, shooting the man once in the leg.

"During this encounter, both the lieutenant and the officer fired their weapons, striking the perpetrator one time in the left leg," Assistant Police Chief David Barrere said. 

The man, identified as 38-year-old Jamel Ethridge, was taken to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition, police said. The officers were also taken to a nearby hospital to be evaluated.

Police said they recovered a loaded 9mm firearm at the scene.

Ethridge was charged with attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and menacing.

Police said he has an extensive criminal record, including attempted murder and multiple arrests for criminal possession of a weapon.
