NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The ghouls and goblins were coming alive in the village, there were lots of skeletons too -- 27 of them, constructed in Red Hook.

"Oh my god, just all these free spirits coming together in the best neighborhood in the world, the west village," Dan told 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria.

There were fairies in white gowns and Batman driving a replica of the Bat Mobile from the TV show of the 60s, along with lots of everyday folks dressed up and expressing themselves.

"I'm John from Staten Island, New York and I'm Ace Frehley tonight," one man announced.

Organizers of the 43rd annual Village Halloween Parade expected to see up to 60,000 people marching through the neighborhood.

As TV 10/55's Andrea Grymes reported, revelers -- including more than 50 bands -- hit the streets around 7 p.m.

Police were expecting more than 1,000,000 people, and a heavy security presence was on hand, including dogs and plain clothes officers.

For those attending the parade it was suggested to take the subway or walk, as traffic may be heavy.

The B, D, F, and M trains all follow the route.
