Get Ready To 'Fall Back:' Daylight Saving Time Is Ending This Weekend

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Get ready for the annual fall ritual of turning back your clocks by one hour, and relish that extra hour of sleep this weekend.

Daylight saving time is ending and it's back to standard time for most people in the United States.

The change comes at 2 a.m. local time Sunday, and the shift moves one hour of daylight to the morning from the evening.

Residents of Hawaii, most of Arizona and some U.S. territories don't need to fiddle with their clocks because those places don't observe daylight saving time. Europe made the change last weekend.

Daylight saving time returns at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, March 12.

When turning the clocks back, the FDNY is reminding New Yorkers to change the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

"The message cannot be any clearer; working smoke alarms save lives," said Commissioner Daniel Nigro. "Smoke alarms provide early warning of a fire and give you and your family the crucial seconds needed to escape. I urge every New Yorker to check their smoke alarms this weekend, and if they don't have one, get one immediately."

Members of the FDNY Fire Safety Education Team will be handing out batteries at more than a dozen locations throughout the five boroughs all weekend.
