NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The New York Cosmos won the North American Soccer League title for the third time in four years Sunday.

Overall, it was the teams’ eighth championship, dating back to the old Cosmos teams from the 1970s and ’80s.

The Sunday night Game against the Indy Eleven went to penalty kicks after two hours with no score, CBS Sports reported. The Cosmos took a 3-1 lead in a shootout, and ultimately won 4-2 as Ryan Richter scored a winning penalty kick, CBS Sports reported.

The Cosmos are New York’s most successful soccer franchise. They are also hoping to get approval to build a brand new stadium in Elmont.
