WASHINGTON (CBSNewYork) — President-elect Donald Trump says he intends to nominate Republican Gov. Nikki Haley of South Carolina to be the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
Here's what you need to show about Haley:
- Haley was elected governor of South Carolina in 2011. She ran for re-election and won in 2014, with her term set to end in 2019. Before becoming governor, Haley served in South Carolina House of Representatives from 2005 to 2011, representing Lexington County.
- Haley didn't always work in politics. According to her official website, Haley's first job was working as a bookkeeper for her family's clothing business. She then went on to work for FCR Corporation, and later helped grow her mother's apparel business, Exotica International, into a thriving corporation.
- Haley did not endorse Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election. First, the Republican endorsed Florida senator Marco Rubio, and then gave her support to Ted Cruz after Rubio dropped out of the race.
- Haley was born on January 20, 1972 in Bamberg, South Carolina. She graduated from Clemson University with a degree in accounting and is married with two children.
The U.N. ambassador job requires Senate approval. If that happens, Haley would become the first female and first nonwhite Cabinet-level official in his administration. She's the daughter of Indian immigrants and is the second Asian-American to serve as a U.S. governor.
