Police Identify Woman Found Beaten To Death On Long Island

BALDWIN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Authorities have identified a woman whose body was found behind a building on Long Island.

Police said 25-year-old Deanna Wingender's body was discovered Wednesday on Merrick Road in Baldwin. She had been beaten to death with a hammer after a quarrel over a sexual encounter, police said.

Raphael Oyague is being held without bail after pleading not guilty Thursday to a murder charge in the case. Two apparent relatives or friends who came to his arraignment declined to comment afterward.

Nassau County Police Detective John Azzata told reporters that Oyague contacted the woman online, and she went to his apartment Tuesday for a sexual rendezvous.

"There was supposed to be compensation for that sex," he said. "There was an argument that ensued and our subject hit our victim with a hammer multiple times."

Police said Oyague carried the young woman's body down a staircase leading from his apartment above an insurance company and adjacent to several restaurants and the public library.

Oyague had prior arrests for assault, drunk driving and violating protective orders.
