Dyker Heights Christmas Lights Causing Parking Headaches For Residents
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The over-the-top Christmas lights extravaganza in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn has been a must-see holiday attraction for more than 30 years, but some say it's getting out of hand.
Every holiday season, six square blocks between 83rd and 86th streets and 11th to 13th avenues are transformed into a winter wonderland.
People come by the thousands to see the legendary light display and this year several blocks have been reserved for tour bus parking only. Bright pink signs posted throughout the neighborhood warn "No Parking: Tour Buses Only."
As CBS2's Alice Gainer reports, the NYPD has the temporary bus parking rule in place now through January 3rd, running from 3pm to midnight every night.
Some residents aren't happy.
"Parking is at a premium in New York, especially in this area in Brooklyn," vented one man. "I'm all for the festivities of Christmas but it's becoming a real hassle."
"I think it's very unfair for the residents, they really have no place to park with all the activity," said Frank, who lives on 86th Street and 13th Avenue.
Louis Mazza is lucky enough to have a private driveway to park in, but says that people have stopped visiting him for the holidays.
"Some of them avoid coming because they know the traffic is insane," he laments.
Even with the parking nightmare, some residents are taking it in stride.
