Former Jets RB Joe McKnight Fatally Shot In Apparent Road Rage Incident

TERRYTOWN, La. (CBSNewYork) -- Former New York Jets running back Joe McKnight was reportedly shot and killed Thursday afternoon in an apparent road rage incident in the New Orleans suburb of Terrytown.

A female witness told The Times-Picayune that around 3 p.m. she saw one man in an intersection yelling at another man, who was trying to apologize. The man who was yelling then opened fire, stood over the victim, said, "I told you don't you f--- with me" and then fired again, the woman said.

Police arrested the suspected shooter, Ronald Gasser, 54, at the scene, The New Orleans Advocate reported.

McKnight was from the New Orleans area. His high school coach, J.T. Curtis, confirmed to The Advocate that McKnight had been killed in the shooting.

The Jets selected McKnight in the fourth round of the 2010 draft out of USC, where he was one of the bigger stars in college football. He played three seasons with the Jets, rushing for 505 yards. He returned two kickoffs for touchdowns. He also played briefly for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2014 and spent time in the Canadian Football League.

McKnight was 28.

Some of his former Jets teammates posted on Twitter on Thursday about their shock and sadness upon learning of McKnight's death.
