Holiday Tipping Guide For City Dwellers

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It's the most wonderful time of the year -- for those who provide a service for you throughout the year.

As New Yorkers know, the holidays are a time for tipping.

So who should go on your personal "nice" list? As CBS2's Jessica Borg reports -- just about everyone in this town.

That includes your delivery man, dog walker, porter, parking attendant, hair stylist, and even your kids' teachers.

Etiquette expert Maria Joyce says between $80 and $120 is proper for your doorman. For your nanny, she generally recommends one week's worth of compensation.

Upper East Side resident Rita Perrault extends the holiday cheer to her dry cleaners, the employees at her local liquor store, and even the men and women who make her deliveries.

For Amy Stone, she makes sure to take care of her handymen and the lifeguards at the pool in her building.

Many say it's not just cold hard cash that's appropriate. Sometimes thoughtful gifts can do the trick.

For tile artist Allison Eden, that means one-of-a-kind art. She said she's given mosaic frames and other similar gifts to people.

She even remembers to give to her local coffee guy.

"If you're running to the subway and if you need your Dunkin' Donuts, there's a line, you know if you tip the guy very well you won't have to wait in line," she said.

Now's your chance to show your gratitude to the folks you give to every year -- and maybe some new ones, too.
