Owner: Burglar Eats Bananas, Takes Nap During LI Restaurant Break-In

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police are searching for a burglar who allegedly ate a bunch of bananas, and took a nap at "The Sexy Salad" restaurant in Hauppauge early Saturday morning.

Owner John Robertson told WCBS 880's Alex Silverman he was "so shaken up" when he realized his restaurant on Adams Avenue had been broken into.

"I immediately went into my office and locked my door and called the police," he said.

But what Robertson saw on his surveillance camera allowed him to exhale.

"A lot of stumbling, he was very, very, very, drunk -- helped himself to a couple of bananas, dropped a couple of bananas," Robertson said. "...A full basket of bananas quickly diminished."

After demolishing the basket of fruit, along with some other snacks, Robertson said the weary burglar took a nearly two and a half hour nap on the floor of the restaurant before waking up and fleeing the scene.

"He was obviously intoxicated, he had fallen and a couple of times he was having a really difficult time just standing still," Robertson said. "...You would think he was dead -- he hadn't moved for three or four or five minutes before he turned around and decided to lay down on the floor and go to sleep."

Robertson said nothing of value was stolen -- he was just left with one big mess.

"I was quite relieved and found the humor in it," Robertson said.

According to Roberson, the hungry burglar left his driver's license at the scene.

No arrests have been made.
