2 Seriously Hurt In Shooting At NJ Turnpike Rest Stop

WOODBRIDGE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – Two people were shot at a rest stop off the New Jersey Turnpike.

Shots were fired at the Thomas Edison rest stop in Woodbridge around 6:45 p.m. Friday.

Investigators could be seen gathering evidence, focusing their attention on a large black van parked near the main entrance to the food and services building just off the exit, CBS2's Valerie Castro reported. The van appeared to have a shattered passenger side window.

Police could be seen interviewing people inside the building, while investigators took pictures of the area outside.

New Jersey State Police said both victims were in serious condition.

People visiting the rest area later in the evening said they were surprised to hear the police presence was for a violent altercation.

"When I was told there was a shooting – I mean, that's pretty shocking. I didn't expect a shooting in a place like this where you come in for like a snack or dinner, just to stop for a bathroom break," traveler Linda Lee said. "So I was a little shocked."

The circumstances of the shooting are still unclear, but it appears both people that were shot were traveling southbound, Castro reported.
