Woman Fatally Struck By Car In Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A woman was killed early Wednesday morning after being struck by a car in Jersey City.

It happened around 4:45 a.m. on Routes 1 and 9 near Sip Avenue.

Jersey City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said the 34-year-old woman was hit by a 2003 Honda Accord while crossing the street. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police initially thought the 29-year-old driver fled the scene, but Morrill said he actually pulled off the roadway about 500 feet away due to the impact from the crash and damage to his car.

Based on the preliminary investigation, Morrill said it appears the woman was crossing against the light.

The driver was taken to the hospital and treated for shock. So far, no charges have been filed.
