Police say Errol Blackwood of Roosevelt, Long Island was shot outside a nearby club and died while trying to drive himself to the hospital.
Surveillance video shows the car approaching the intersection of Liberty Avenue. As soon as Blackwood passes the light, he loses control of the vehicle and slammed into at least two parked vehicles.
“When I heard that, I was running down on the floor,” witness Abel Castillo told CBS2’s Marc Liverman. Castillo was in his car right across the street from the Jouvay Night Club when the heard the shots. “Pop pop pop pop pop pop pop, like that.”
Police say Blackwood, 59, had gunshot wounds all over his body when he got into the car and tried to drive himself to the hospital. Investigators were looking at what looks like bullet holes in the wall of the club, Liverman reported.
“There were a lot of shots. Like, 15 or 20 shots,” Castillo said. Once everything was quiet, Castillo cautiously made his way closer to the scene.READ MORE: Kyra's Law: Long Island Mother Pushing Bills To Protect Children In Custody Battles Involving Abusive Parents
“When I was running here, I didn’t see nobody here,” he said.
The victim made it a couple of blocks before losing consciousness and struck the cars. Police say they found him in the driver’s seat unresponsive. He was rushed to Jamaica Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Witnesses told police Blackwood was talking to a woman when the shots were fired. He was the only one hit. Preliminary investigation suggests the woman he was speaking with may have been the intended target and she was hit unintentionally.
The motive remains unclear.
