Labor Day Weekend Crowds Pack Beaches, Pools

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- After a summer of pesky weekend weather, the sun is out for a final summer sendoff.

On Sunday, CBS2's Clark Fouraker was at Coney Island, where families showed up early to enjoy the holiday weekend.

There won't be much that stops Jessica Molina and her family from enjoying their favorite beach over the next few days.

"A good time, some music, some food, some Nathan's hot dogs, some cotton candy ... it doesn't get any better than that," said Molina, a Washington Heights resident.

Coney Island is bracing for a big Labor Day turnout, the unofficial last weekend of summer before kids go back to school and fall work schedules kick in.

"You look at the beach sometimes and it's so packed all you see are umbrellas. You don't see the sand. I feel bad for the lifeguards. You got young ones in the water, you've got to keep your eye on them," Bensonhurst resident Anthony Sarlo said.

Families arrived at Coney Island early Sunday to get coveted front row spots right along the water to enjoy their holiday weekend, CBS2's Fouraker reported.

"There's less people, more space, not too crowded," East New York resident Kendra Harris said.

"We have a place that we come to here and have 10 grandkids, and three kids and all of them are together in one location. It's cool, very cool," added Alpine, New Jersey's Don Kesselman.

Chris Gaylord of Park Slope and his 2-year-old son, Wilson, came ready with toys.

"It's great. It's a beautiful day and we got out here nice and early. He's having a great time," Gaylord said. "Playing in the sand, gathering shells, learning how to build sand castles."

Runners and bikers said they were thankful to be able to enjoy a rain-free weekend along the boardwalk.

"This summer has been kind of rough," said David Crockett of Bay Ridge. "I have not been on my bike as much as I would have liked to have been."

"It's the end of the summer. Kids are going back to school, so they'll try to get the last of it in," Sarlo added.

No matter how you like to enjoy the coast, Coney Island is ready to give a final sendoff to summer.

City Parks has pushed back the end of beach season one week to Sept. 10, Fouraker reported.
