Queens Couple Welcomes NYC Area's First Baby Of 2019

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The greater New York area has welcomed its first baby of 2019.

The area's first child, to CBS2's knowledge, was welcomed by parents Eli and Adina Derdick, of Kew Gardens.

"We had a whole cheering squad, we had the ball dropping in the background, and it was just a lot of adrenaline and excitement and we made it," Adina said.

The baby boy, who has yet to be given a name, was born at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park. The staff and loving parents are taking pride in the New Year's Day special delivery.

"One of the nurses nicknamed him '007' because of the seven seconds that made him the first one, I guess," Adina said.

Meantime, little Dion Karpuzi was welcomed into the world by his joyous mom Mia Balanca, arriving just 30 seconds into the new year at Staten Island University Hospital.

In a tweet, Mayor Bill de Blasio's office recognized little Genesis Elisa Noriega as the city's first baby of 2019.

Little Genesis weighed in at 7 pounds, 8 ounces, and arrived at 12:56 a.m. at NYC Health + Hospital/Harlem.

Mom Maria Contreras and dad Gabino Noriega have two other children. They call their new bundle of joy their "special gift."

Congrats to all the new parents, and welcome to the world new babies from everyone at CBS New York!
