Expert: How The Finishing Horse Didn't Win This Year's Kentucky Derby

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - It was a stunning turn of events after the race as stewards went to the instant replay and spent 20 minutes making a decision. What they decided was a Kentucky Derby first: The horse that crossed the line first, didn't win.

CBS2's Steve Overmyer talked with Joe Bianca of the Thoroughbred Daily News to break down exactly what happened.

In the 145th running of the Kentucky Derby, Maximum Security took an early lead and held off all challengers on the muddy track.

However, his jockey says the young horse got spooked by the loud crowd coming around the turn and changed lanes.

Because he interfered with more than one horse, the stewards decided it would merit a disqualification.
He crossed the line believing he won the race, but that honor goes to Country House, a long shot who stalked and made it pay off with a Kentucky derby win.

How much of a long shot was Country Home? The longest shot to win the Derby in more than 100 years, at 65-1, a $2 won $132.
