Town Of Hempstead Official Accused Of Stealing Nearly $60,000 For Mortgage, Winery, Candy

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - On Long Island, a high ranking official is indicted on charges he stole nearly $60,000 from a political group.

John Novello is deputy commissioner for the Town of Hempstead's buildings department.

Prosecutors say he withdrew money from the Cedarhurst Republican Committee's bank account, and also took fundraising donations.

Novello's accused of using the money for his mortgage, a trip to a winery, on entertainment, and luxury candies.

He pleaded not guilty.
