Box Truck Slams Into Staten Island Home After Driver Suffers Medical Emergency

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – There was a scary scene on Staten Island Wednesday morning when a delivery truck slammed into the front of a house.

A grocery delivery truck was making the rounds when it left the road and hit the home.

The crash happened around 7 a.m. on Hillcrest Street in the Great Kills section.

"I heard the bang, and I looked out the window and the truck was against the house," said neighbor Anthony Raziano.

That loud bang was the sound of a Peapod grocery delivery truck hitting the home. The collision, and the commotion that followed, startled the neighborhood, reported CBSN New York's Nick Caloway.

"As I came down the block, I saw all the lights and everything," said neighbor Bob Feuerstein.

Fire officials say around 7 a.m. the driver of the truck had some kind of medical episode behind the wheel, causing him to lose control.

The driver was extricated and taken to the hospital, with non-life-threatening injuries.

The people inside the home were shaken up, but not harmed.

Neighbors say at the time of the morning, it's a busy street for pedestrians, so it could be tragic.

"The kids go to IS 24, which is right up the block over here. So thank God nobody was walking at that time," Raziano said.

Caloway spoke with the homeowner, who didn't want to speak on camera. He just called the whole thing surreal.
