17-Year-Old Girl Tyeah Garner Shot To Death Overnight In Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) –A 17-year-old girl named Tyeah Garner was shot to death overnight in Jersey City.

The shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. Monday near the corner of Rutgers Avenue and New Street.

Police said 17-year-old Garner was found with a gunshot wound to her upper body.

She was rushed to Jersey City Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead six hours later.

So far, no arrests have been made. Friends and family came with candles, balloons and heavy hearts after spending hours constructing a memorial for Garner.

"She was just at the wrong place at the wrong time, they just came over here to chill," said Makayla Mac, a childhood friend.

"She was young, she was fun, it wasn't her time," said Drew Spring, a Jersey City resident.

Officers returned to the crime scene Tuesday afternoon to rifle through garbage cans and look for evidence. One of the bullets appeared to have struck a car park nearby.

Friends say Garner was a high school junior at Lincoln High School. She was a singer, choreographer and someone who always thought of others.

"She really cared. All she wanted to do was help children and become a nurse," said Mac. "She wanted to dance, all of it, you name it."
