NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A group of turtles has been rescued at JFK Airport.

The Port Authority’s chief wildlife biologist says in late spring, hundreds of female diamondback terrapins at JFK make their way to safer areas to lay eggs.

There’s fencing around the runway, but they say some turtles always slip through.

The environmental staff collects the turtles, tags them and then releases them just outside the fencing.
