A New York City Guide To 2011's Style Trends

One of the best things about a brand new year? Brand new clothes. As seasons change, trends evolve and there are some really great defining pieces for the upcoming seasons. Living in one of fashion's forefronts means us New York City fashionistas are on the cutting edge of the season's staples.  Check out this guide on which must-have items you need to stock up on for 2011 - and where you can find them. By Jenn D'Imperio.

Sheer Maxi Dresses

Maxi dresses made a huge comeback two years ago but died out quickly. For a fresh take on the maxi dress, try a sheer version. I just purchased this sheer slip from Free People for $98 and it's beautiful. You can incorporate and layer pieces that you already have in your wardrobe underneath to create a bunch of different looks.

Punk Fashion

Punk is not dead and not going anywhere - as evidenced at Balmain's Spring/Summer 2011 show. The key is to add just a touch of punk (a small rip here, a few studs there) so you don't wind up looking like a Halloween costume or Sid Vicious on a bad day. Try something pretty and feminine, such as a mini floral dress (this one from Topshop for $70 is awesome), and pair it with a leather vest or combat boots (We love these Baker's boots for only $39.99) to give it an edge.

Crop Tops

Alicia Silverstone made the crop top famous back in the nineties as Cher in Clueless, but the modern version is much more wearable. For 2011, the crop top is about showing off a toned midriff without revealing too much skin, as shown at the Paul and Joe runway show for Spring/Summer. Rock a cropped top with high-waisted pants or skirt to show just a sliver of tummy. Classy and sexy. Try this silk one from Nasty Gal for $48.

Tail Hems

Tail hem dresses and tops are hot for 2011. Dresses that are cut shorter in the front and longer in the back are playful and sexy, like this one shown at the Etro Spring/Summer 2011 show. Check out Topshop's great upcoming collection of cutaway and dipping hems.

Wide Leg Pants

The best thing about 70's inspired wide leg pants, like these shown at Marc Jacobs, is that they are flattering for almost all body types. For 2011, wide leg pants are loose fitting and high-waisted and look great with sky high platforms and a crisp white top. Department stores like Bergdorf Goodman offer pricey versions. For the working girl, we suggest New York & Company's 7th Avenue Wide Leg Pant, or these Topshop pants for $80.
