Creative Ways To Stay Fit This Winter In NYC

In New York, lacing up your sneakers and dodging snow banks on a freezing cold run isn't your only  fitness option this season. We've listed a bunch of enjoyable, healthy activities that will also torch some calories, as well as places to try each one around the city. Some are indoor and some outdoor, but either way, they all beat the treadmill. By Brooke Sager.

Boxing

Boxing doesn't have to be as scary and as, well, violent as professional MMA fighters make it look. It's a workout that's both empowering and way more exciting than the StairMaster. Throwing a few right hooks will really get your heart pumping and makes for the ultimate stress relief.

Sign up for a class or try a private lesson at one of these three gyms. Don't be nervous—both guys and gals of all ages and skill levels are welcome. For the ladies:  If you're not exactly comfortable working out next to the big boys, Kingsway Gym offers a women-only class on Saturday mornings.

Horseback Riding

Thinks horseback riding is just a calm ride with a twelve-hundred-pound animal doing all the work? Think again. An hour-long riding lesson can burn around 350 calories (even more if you get a stubborn horse).

This may come as a surprise, but there are a handful of barns and stables nestled in the concrete jungle. Some stables have indoor rings so you can stay a bit warmer while saddling up in the winter. If it's your first time on a horse, the instructor may have you take an evaluation lesson, but don't worry, it will still be a calorie-torcher.

Sign up for a riding lesson at one of these metro area stables:

Ice Skating

Just hearing the term 'ice skating in New York City,' will automatically send any native New Yorker into a tizzy. Such words conjure up frightening images of the crowded Central Park rink, or getting mauled while trying to figure out where the line starts at Rockefeller Center. CBSNewYork would never send you to any of these tourist traps. Instead, we located some indoor and outdoor ice rinks in the metro area that will let you enjoy this winter activity without getting trampled on your way there:

World Ice Arena
At Flushing Meadows Corona Park
125-40 Roosevelt Ave
Flushing, New York 11355

Spinning/Indoor Cycling

Talk about a serious sweat session. Whether you bike twenty-three miles a week or have never sat on a bike seat, Spin classes make for an amazing workout for people of all levels. Instructors blast upbeat music and cheer you on as you pant and pedal your heart out. Many gyms offer Spin classes, but we found some studios in Manhattan that are dedicated completely to indoor cycling:
