BERGEN COUNTY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – Election Day in New Jersey is dramatically different this year because of COVID-19.
Instead of crowded lines at the polls, the election has been conducted predominantly by mail.
For the first time ever in New Jersey, workers began counting mail-in ballots before Election Day.
Gov. Phil Murphy allowed the work to start 10 days before the close of polls because of the sheer number of paper ballots generated in this primarily vote-by-mail election.
In Bergen County, the Board of Elections has been opening, separating, and scanning approximately 100,000 ballots a day. The results cannot be revealed until polls close.
“They store the numbers in here, we back them up to a server, and that server is put into a secure, locked location,” said Alicia Perez, Bergen County ballot facilitator.
Voters had until 8 p.m. Nov. 3 to drop their ballot off at a polling place or a secure drop box location.
If the U.S. Postal Service does not deliver your ballot by November 10th, it will not be counted.
“Do not delay in doing anything in terms of this election,” said Secretary of State Tahesha Way.
There is also the option to vote in person.
Polling places had voting machines, but officials say they were reserved for those with disabilities.
Most people were handed a provisional paper ballot.
