Emmy award-winning journalist Valerie Castro joined CBS 2 in January 2015 as a general assignment reporter.

Previously, Castro spent five years at the CBS station KCNC-TV in Denver, Colorado from 2009 to 2014. She covered several high profile stories including historic wildfires, floods and winter snowstorms.  She was also there for the Aurora Theater Shooting and extensively covered court hearings following that event.

Prior to KCNC-TV, Castro worked as a reporter and weekend morning anchor in Albuquerque, New Mexico at KOB-TV. She began her journalism career in Farmington, New Mexico in the Four Corners area as a backpack journalist where she carried her own camera equipment, shooting video, editing, anchoring and reporting.

Castro also spent time at ABC News in New York as an intern for 20/20 and Primetime. She graduated from the University of Colorado with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism.

While she calls Colorado home, Castro has lived in several countries including England and the Netherlands. She’s a Spanish speaker and a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

During her free time, Castro enjoys movies, running, reading, sampling the city’s amazing cuisine and spending time outdoors.
