Don’t let a snow day get you down! There’s plenty of fun things to do at home or take advantage of all the fluffy powder outside. By Carly Petrone.
There are plenty of great places to go sledding with friends and family all throughout New York City. Central Park boasts two ideal spots at Pilgrim Hill and Cedar Hill. The former is the mecca of all rides while the latter is great for beginners. Head uptown to Morningside Park where Columbia students tend to use their dining hall trays as sleds. Get creative with your family and hit the hills! Riverside Park is a great place to slide with a view of the Hudson River. Some of the best areas are between 92nd and 103 Streets. If you’re in Brooklyn, head to Prospect Park to Long Meadow for some straight downhill fun.
Hit up your favorite cozy fireplace bar and warm up with a nice hot toddy or a glass of mulled wine. Shoolbred’s in the East Village offers both hot cocktails as well as some pretty delicious bar grub. Union Hall in Brooklyn boasts an extensive library of books for you to peruse, while Amsterdam Ale House serves up a variety of brews for you to try while you wait out the storm. Bottoms up!
Break Out Those Board Games
Break out your favorite board games and get lost in some good old-fashioned fun. May we suggest Cards Against Humanity, Scattergories, Apples to Apples, Scrabble, or Settlers of Catan? There’s nothing better than a little competition among friends. You’ll forget there’s even a storm happening outside.
Learn A New Recipe
A snow day is the perfect time to try out that recipe you’ve kept tucked away. Dust off your slow cooker and create a delicious stew or chili, cook meals for the workweek, or spice up your favorite cookie recipe with something fun like green tea, coconut, bacon, or pumpkin. Get your neighbors together for a potluck or keep it all for yourself — after all, you did all the work!
