Every August, North America's largest multi-arts festival takes over small theaters all around the city. The New York International Fringe Festival specializes in emerging playwrights and performers, giving more than 200 companies a chance to get their big break, or just perform their work to (generally) very appreciative audiences. Tons of shows and stars got their start at the Fringe. Saturday, Aug. 14, through Sunday, Aug. 30, see schedule for details, tickets required.

Inspired by car-free, pedestrian-only events in Bogotá and Paris, New York City began Summer Streets a few years ago. This Saturday, you can stroll, bike, amble, and/or run without a care for street lights or vehicle traffic for roughly seven miles along Park Avenue. You can see street art, learn soccer, take a fitness class, hang out with some dogs, and meet Ben Franklin. New this year? A 270-foot waterslide (register online)!!! Saturday, Aug. 15, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., free.

Saturday, Aug. 15, and Sunday, Aug. 16, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., $35, tickets required.
