THE DEFENSE

Q: Time to defend your ride. What's your name? Can you tell me where we are and what brings you here today?

A: My name is Cody and I'm here to pick up my son, who was having a sleepover at a friend's place here in Manhattan. I'm also here to pick up my wife's bike, which is right down the street, and take it back to Brooklyn. She doesn't feel like riding it.

Q: So you're the superman of the day?

A: Pretty much.

Q: Tell me about your ride.

A: I have it parked here on 14th Street between 7th and 8th and it's a 2006 Toyota Corolla.

Q: What is your car's main use?

A: At this point, I drive it to work and then recreation.

Q: Where would you go, if you could go on a day trip?

A: Day trip? We go to Bear Mountain every now and again.

Q: Where's the furthest you've driven it?

A: Florida. We did it slowly. It took us about three days. My mom lives down there.

Q: Do you have any rules in the car?

A: When we first got the car, there were rules, but they quickly got thrown out. No eating in the car. It lasted about a month. When the first greasy food spills on the floor, then it's over.

Q: Do you listen to music in the car?

A: Yes. Point of contention. My son, who is 10, has now fallen in love with popular music. I can't handle being in the car for 45 minutes and listening to the same song twice. I get sick of it rather rapidly, so there's a lot of debate. Mostly, I am my family's stereo nazi. I control what goes on. I try to notice that there are other people in my family's car, but it's mostly me choosing what goes on. I listen to 60s and 70s R&B.

Q: Did you buy the car new?

A: Yes, we bought it new. Bay Ridge Toyota. We live in Bay Ridge, 11220.

Q: Do you have any favorite features?

A: The first thing I asked when I bought the car is what kind of stereo it had. That's my favorite feature. I like cruise control. I used to do a lot of long distance driving for work. I used to drive to Albany all the time, so I fell in love with cruise control for that reason.

Q: What do you think your next car will be?

A: According to my wife, the next car will be some kind of hybrid. I'm not a car person. I prefer function over form. I just want it to work. I like Toyotas.
