If you don’t have plans for Memorial Day weekend, we’ve got you covered. Here are six events happening in New York City. By Carly Petrone.
Feel like a kid again this Memorial Day weekend with a trip to Syndicated, Bushwick’s independent cinema and restaurant/bar. Enjoy two quintessential American summer favorites: meat and mini golf. Starting at noon, guests can play a one-hole course, complete with movie-related mini golf obstacles. Players will also get the chance to win prizes like koozies, t-shirts, and mason jars. Chef Bret Macris is glazing up some barbecue beef ribs with Downeast Cider and traditional sides like coleslaw, potato salad, and parker house rolls with honey butter. Grab a seat and watch a screening of Caddyshack at 2 p.m. or stick around the bar and watch Happy Gilmore on loop from noon until 6 p.m.
Dinosaur Bar-B-Que and SoldierStrong’s Sauce for a Cause
If you’d like to give back this Memorial Day weekend then head over to Dinosaur Bar-B-Que. This bustling restaurant has teamed up with SoldierStrong — a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing advanced medical technologies to veterans — for a charity offering called Sauce for a Cause. Purchase a bottle of Sensuous Slathering BBQ Sauce ($5.95) at either their Brooklyn or Harlem locations and all proceeds will go towards the nonprofit. And if you’re heading to the beach this weekend, make sure to stop by Dinosaur Bar-B-Que’s Summer Pop-Up in Coney Island. The smoker is out and all of your grilling favorites are on the menu.
Smorgasburg is back at South Street Seaport! Starting Memorial Day weekend, you can nosh on delicacies from all over New York City, including fan favorites like Cemitas El Tigre, Lumpia Shack Snack Bar NYC, Landhaus, and more. Stop by on Sunday to enjoy an assortment of local food and specialty goods at the Fulton Stall Market. Brooklyn-based indie rock bands Flower Girl (May 28th), Heavy Birds (May 29th), and Katie Von Schleicher (May 30th) will also be performing live outside of the Fulton Market Building all weekend long from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. The best part? You can eat your way through Smorgasburg at the Seaport all the way through the fall! Vendors are open daily from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. See website for more details.
Minus5 Ice Bar at New York Hilton
Chill out this holiday weekend at Minus5 Ice Bar with signature cocktails that are served in glasses made of pure ice. In salute to the troops, the ice bar will offer 2-for-1 entry for all veterans (with valid I.D.). It’s certainly an experience — the bar is tempered at minus five degrees Celsius – make sure to take advantage of the parkas, gloves, and boots that are available before entering this frozen room. Don’t worry, the ice bar isn’t too intimidating, thanks to the faux fur covered seats. You’ve never had a bar experience quite like this.
CookOut NYC Food Party on the Pier
If you’re a foodie, you’ll definitely want to spend your Memorial Day weekend at the CookOut NYC Food Party on the Pier. Saturday’s Sunset Session ($75) includes unlimited cider and craft beer, raw bar and oysters, veggie burgers and sliders, as well as plenty of the traditional grilling food options. Watch George Motz’s Battle of the Burgers while enjoying live music along the waterfront. Sunday’s afternoon ticket allows guests to enjoy one complimentary drink as well of plenty of a-la-carte options from grilled cheese stations, Luke’s Lobster and more. Stick around for Sunday’s Sunset session, which includes a Sea2Table Fish Fry. See website for more details about this two-day foodie festival.
