NYC Style: Stylist Alexa Ryan

by Kimberly Rae Miller

Alexa Ryan
Borough/Neighborhood:   East Village
Profession:  Stylist

Celebrity and fashion stylist Alexa Ryan got her start in Los Angeles, where she worked styling in all areas of the entertainment business. Covering music, movies, television and fashion, Alexa has created looks for album covers and music videos, as well as movie premieres and fashion editorials for clients including Brooke Shields, Anjelica Huston, Mena Suvari, Lindsay Lohan and Jessica Biel.  Since her move to New York five years ago, she has applied her sharp eye for fashion to advertising campaigns for Yahoo, Colgate and Intercontinental Hotels among others.

How would you define your personal style?

Eclectic and modern.  I like to bring a little bit of everything together but it has to be always comfortable and wearable. I can't do this job if I'm not able to run around the city and get down on the floor and pin a pair of pants.

When you're working with a client, what's your process in creating a signature style for them?

We try a lot of different things!   I love collaborating with clients; the best clients that have a distinct point of view.

What should those of us without a stylist take into consideration when trying to create a defining look for ourselves?

Don't be afraid to break out of the norm, take chances but know yourself and what works for you.  Don't feel like you have to follow every trend if you know it doesn't suit your lifestyle, age or body type.

Favorite item in your closet right now?

Black parachute silk maxi skirt and my new Dolce & Gabbana booties.

Trends you wish would go away already?

Midriff baring shirts. The whole 90's redux.

Favorite Shopping spots in the five boroughs?

Eva New York (on bowery)  -- Excellent selection of under the radar and emerging designers.

Uniqlo – Best trench coats and basics at great prices.

Bergdorf Goodman – The most elegant shopping experience and best spot to splurge.
