NYC's 4 Best Greenmarket Finds

As fall weather sweeps in and baking season sneaks up, it's the perfect time to hit up your local greenmarket. The New York City markets are the perfect places to find the best fresh local produce, but that's not all they have to offer. From local honey and beeswax candles to dog treats, here are a few of the best finds at our area's outdoor farmers markets.

Andrew's Honey is sourced from hives located all around New York City. Each neighborhood's fauna lends certain flavors and colors to the honey, which is why you buy these jars by the neighborhood name--not honey blended together. They also have candles, honey comb, and soaps available for purchase. The stand is currently at the Greenmarket in Union Square on Wednesdays and the Forest Hills Greenmarket in Queens on Sundays.

Roxbury Mountain Maple is a new maple farm found in the Catskills. Of course, the main draw is their maple syrup--they even have darker and rich Grade B available. But a second look at their table and you see all sorts of maple goodies, including maple peanut brittle. The maple gives it a richer, more earthy sweetness than sugar alone, and you can easily find yourself eating the whole bag. You can find Roxbury Mountain Maple at the Union Square Greenmarket on Mondays and Wednesdays.

The Greenmarkets are filled to the brim with pies, breads, and cakes of all sorts, but few of the bakeries have anything specifically available for four-legged friends, except for Meredith's Bread from upstate Kingston, NY. Look on the bottom shelves of their racks and you'll find two kinds of dog biscuits, chicken or beef, made with all-natural ingredients. Meredith's Bread stands are open throughout the year in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. Check out their website for specific stand locations broken down by borough and region.

Body & Soul

Most non-vegans would instantly skip the longtime Greenmarket vendor, Body & Soul. They would be missing out on some incredibly interesting and flavorful taste combinations like plum and basil. Another thing Body & Soul does right is their chocolate chip cookie--it's incredibly chewy and moist, and is one of the best cookies available. The stand is open at Union Square Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
