New York City is not only home to a diverse population of people, it is also filled with folks who love their dogs. Just walk down the street and see the dog walkers with their happy companions. They are everywhere. However, owning a dog in the city can be a challenge due to limited space. Every dog deserves a home and if you think you're ready to commit to a little separation, build your pooch a doghouse of its own. Refer to these three tips when creating a home for your pup.

1. Is it worth the hassle?

Doghouses are worth having to provide a secure space for your pooch, even in a bustling city. Build a petite doghouse to keep in a corner of a room for a smaller breed, and place it on the terrace in pleasant weather. Dwellers that have houses with private yards can offer a bit more room for a bigger dog with an outdoor home.

2. Consider the right design.

Before starting the project, measure the space to determine an appropriate size to build. Take into consideration the dog's build as well, ensuring it will have enough room. Review different plans and designs to find one that suits your taste. The doghouse should be well vented for airflow in hot weather and to keep mold from growing. Build the house on a platform raised off of the damp ground to keep your dog dry. Just as with your own house, you will want to have overhangs to protect doors and windows from outdoor elements. Make sure not to use any chemically-treated wood that could be harmful to your pet and also make sure that there will be easy access for cleaning.

3. Gather the right tools for proper construction.

Nothing will be accomplished hassle free without the right tools. Everyone should have basic tools in their home tool box. The claw hammer is perfect to bang in various-sized nails that are needed for building, and measuring tape will assure that each piece of lumber is cut to exact specifications. Also, do not forget the power tools. Circular saws are very useful for making clean straight cuts when cutting wood boards. If this is a family building experience, make sure the children are responsible for only jobs they can handle, while wearing the necessary protective gear at all times.
