NYC Accessories Event Showcases Latest Trends

NEW YORK (CBS 2) -- Think big. That was the word at AccessoriesTheShow, an all-accessory trade event which came to the Jacob Javits Center this week.

The showcase featured the latest trend in jewelry, with showy necklaces and big rings – the kind of pieces to be worn by those not afraid to say, "Look at me!"

"They're looking to make a statement," said Stacy Samet, director of sales for the show. "They're looking to describe their attitude towards fashion."

There are about 1400 new lines of accessories at the show, with buyers from the smallest of boutiques to the major department stores. Sellers say business is good – really good.

"People are buying, people are up," said vendor Deborah Reiff. "I'm looking at a 25 percent increase over last season already, and it's only day two of the show."

Everywhere, there seems to be new takes on old favorites. Fringe, for instance, is back – but in a fresh, bold color.

And the fedora has been reborn, in new colors and fabrics.

"We wanted to update more for spring style," said Jamie West. "More lightweight, with more open weaves."

And expect to see decorative headbands in stores soon. They're selling fast.

And bling is back – but more subtle, sophisticated forms.

"People are really looking for a little sparkle with their accessories," said Samet"You can really wear this day, or evening and not be over the top."

Samet says people seem to want the fun back in their lives, accessories at the show reflect that. They offer a quick way to update an outfit and even overhaul a mood without breaking the bank.

"They want to feel good, they want the feel good piece of jewelry or a bag," she said. "A great bag can change your day."

Not many women would disagree with that statement!
