FDNY Hiring Freeze Ordered Amid Discrimination Battle

NEW YORK (AP/WCBS 880) — A judge has halted the hiring of new firefighters amid the legal battle over alleged discrimination at the New York City Fire Department.

In a written decision Wednesday in federal court in Brooklyn, U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis found that an entry exam used by the mostly white department was unfair to black and Hispanic applicants. He ordered the city to explain why it wanted to hire new firefighters based on an “invalid test.”

Attorneys for the city said they were disappointed by the ruling. They warned it would force the city to pay millions in overtimes to make up for understaffing.

The ruling follows earlier setbacks for the city in the civil rights case. The same judge found that the FDNY had deliberately discriminated against minorities and ordered it to revamp its hiring practices.

It would be nice if the CITY’s Fire and Police Departments (and their unions) were allowed to hire CITY residents. They can’t truly “serve and protect” us if they aren’t willing to live among us.

Racism will never end as long as minorities want free handouts, and start with a goal and try to obtain it.

he did try and failed because of a glass ceiling. Stop trolling about it because it seems like a judge is finally standing up for what is fair.

I took the FDNY exam twice in the 1980s and both times my final scores were over 90. I was never called. I think it had less to do with being a so called minority and more to do with not having family already on the job. If the Dept. of Personel is serious about giving every applicant an equal opportunity, perhaps they should follow their own rules and process everyone who passes the first test before give another exam with the same title. By the way, I feel I was discriminated against–When do I get compensated?

Awwwww…. poor you. What else can the government do for you? You already can have a free education, no interest loans, and get a job anywhere you want. Waaah-Waaah-Waaaah!!!!
