Bethpage Twins: Town Water Tastes Like A 'Pool'

BETHPAGE, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- A traffic sign in Bethpage proudly proclaims: "Home of New York state's best tasting drinking water," but many residents say that's no longer true.

"It smells of chlorine, it reeks of it," Jacquelyn Aksoy told 1010 WINS reporter Mona Rivera. "It's just disgusting, it tastes like pool water."

Bethpage was recently forced to chlorinate its water supply over the objections of the water district and many residents.

In 2007, the Nassau County Health Department made it mandatory that any water district that serves 3,300 people had to chlorinate its water as a security measure.

Twins Jessica and Jacquelyn Aksoy have started a Facebook group and a petition to end the chlorination.

"There's 33,000 people who live in Bethpage", said Jessica,  "I haven't met anyone yet who said 'Oh, I love this chlorinated water.'"

The twins have a booth for their petition at a Bethpage carnival Thursday through Saturday. They hope to gather thousands of signatures.
