NEW YORK (CBS 2) – Most Americans are against building a controversial mosque near Ground Zero, a CBS news poll has found.

According to the poll results,  only 22 percent of Americans surveyed think it’s appropriate to build the mosque and cultural center two blocks away, on Park Place.

On the other hand, 71 percent who responded said they think it’s not appropriate for the facility to go up so close to the World Trade Center site.

Opponents have said that building the mosque and cultural center so close to Ground Zero would be insensitive to 9/11 families.

Supporters said the religious freedom of Muslims must be protected.

If they are not allowed to build, then I suppose, the Muslims do not have religious freedom in this country. Obviously, that is the goal of those who are against allowing them to build the center of worship. They should be able to build it directly at ground zero, let alone several blocks away. The only argument against it is coming from extremists who are determined to restrict or remove the freedom for other people.

Being insensitive to the victims of mass murder is building anything related to commerce on top of the ashes of those who still might not have even been found yet. Sensitivity and human decency would have been to make all of Ground Zero a memorial park, but Larry Silverstein cares nothing about that and only wants a return on his investment. Does anyone want to explain to me how Silverstein got TWO insurance payouts for two separate incidents when 9/11 was ONE huge attack on multiple targets?

In America, the backers of this mosque have the constitutional right to be insensitive to the victims of mass murder, but they can be beaten at their own game. Why not just buy the adjacent buildings and put in a pig slaughterhouse, a BBQ rib place, a strip club and a liquor store? (Each of which I’m sure would result in Obama supporting the developer’s constitutional right to build it)

Obviously, this wouldn’t help things for anyone, and it would be best if all parties could just show a little sensitivity and human decency. Nevertheless, if the mosque backers insist on exercising their right to spit on the 9/11 victims’ graves, the rest of us can assert our right to spit on their mosque. The 1st amendment does work both ways after all.

Idiots. Do you think the Second Amendment should be suspended in Columbine as well? The Constitution supercedes personal emotions.

I find it disgusting that so many of us Americans forget that our ancestors were all once immigrants. What makes you so fit to judge anyone who comes here for the same reasons your ancestors did? Every group has good and bad in the bunch, no matter where you come from.

If you took the time to research what it is you’re talking about, you’d realize that the Cordoba Initiative was named for a period in time when all religions peacefully coexisted in the same place in Cordoba, Spain. It was a time of prosperity in regards to intellect, spirituality, culture and commerce amongst Muslims, Jews and Christians. Wow, what a concept…everyone working together and getting along. That doesn’t sound like the United States at all now, does it?

The bottom-line reason most Americans are opposed to this cultural center being here is that they are afraid. Did you ever think that they’ve chosen 9/11/2011 as the date to open because they want to help usher in a new era of understanding and dialogue? If anyone is calling Mayor Bloomberg a traitor, why are YOU not considered a traitor by denying anyone the same rights you have that are guaranteed by our Constitution? How about Americans companies that layoff all their workers and send all their jobs overseas? Are the owners of those American companies not traitors as well? What great Americans!

Once and for all, this building it not a mosque; it is a cultural building that contains a prayer space on one of its 15 floors. Do a little research and stop sucking up all that the media feeds your insatiable appetites for hatred.

Was it a good idea to build a McDonald’s in Hiroshima or Nagasaki?
The acute effects killed 90,000–166,000 civilians in Hiroshima and 60,000–80,000 in Nagasaki.
Muslims builds mosques…Americans build McDonald’s.
Don’t get more American than that.

KEEP SCREAMING ABOUT RELIGIOUS FREEDOM-WHEN YOU KNOW IT’S NOT ABOUT THAT AT ALL.
IF THAT WERE TRUE THERE WOULD NOT BE A SINGLE MOSQUE IN THIS COUNTRY-AND THERE ARE OVER 100 MOSQUES IN NYC ALONE-SO YOUR ARGUMENT IS REDICULOUS.
WHY THIS SPOT? WHY THE REFUSAL TO MOVE FROM THIS SPOT? THIS SPOT HAS SIGNIFICANCE TO THEIR AGENDA. OPEN YOUR EYES.
THIS PARTICULAR GROUP IS NOT WHAT THEY APPEAR TO BE, THEY ARE NOT MODERATE.

If the poll is correct, then it proves that most Americans are idiots – trying to use their grief to deny their fellow Americans’ right to religious freedom. Tak this – 45% of U.S. Muslims are African American, not foreigners. What do you say now?

August 26, 2010 at 4:29 pm

Kelly

This group shouted the loudest that they were a voice of peace & tolerence.
yeah, we can see that…
Apparently only to fellow Muslims.

Build your mosque.
Just don’t build it here.
You are hurting many people.
Or was that the idea….

August 26, 2010 at 4:28 pm

k.a

let me ask you a question: if a family member was killed by a drunk driver. would you associate the drunk driver with …er…let’s say your chauffeur at work? would you hate your driver at work just because they’re both drivers? and would you forbid him from parking his car near your home because 1 of your family members was hit by a car driven by a drunk driver?

You don’t want the mosque to be built in that area because you’re associating the terrorist attacks with the muslim population and that’s not true. Muslims are not terrorists and terrorists are NOT MUSLIMS, they are extremists and they claim it’s islam and that they’re getting the “virgins in heaven” BUT THEY’RE NOT because the quran says that if someone killed an innocent soul then it’s as if they killed all people and if someone helped a person live then it’s as if they helped all people live. Murder is 1 of the 7 major sins in Islam (major sins are unforgivable and unrepentable) so those people who want to build the mosque are not the same as those who have committed the 9/11 attacks. That said, any objection to the building of the mosque at that area means that you are accusing your muslim neighbor, friend, colleague or doctor of murder and by the same token, accusing your company driver of killing that person who was hit by a drunk driver.

Mark,
This is for you %$#&*%!

What about the owners of this building Burlington Coat Factory. Lets put some
pressure on them. DON”T SELL. It’s been vacant for so long what difference does it make.
Hold out!
Burlington should be ashamed of themselves. Let’s all e-mail the Company.

I SAY BUILD IT !! . everyone who doesnt like it can shut their traps. ohh 9/11 this, ohhh 9/11 that. Get over it !!

August 26, 2010 at 4:20 pm

JASON

Agree…people are so ignorant. Most Americans sound like little teenage girls, getting all upset and emotional- about things that aren’t even pertaining to the truth of 9/11.

1-Since the majority of americans are against the Mosque IMAN should recind his offer to buy the building.
2- Isn’t there anyone else who can offer more and buy the damm building?
3- When Americans visit muslim nations why don’t they respect our religion which does not entail wearing a burka?
4- Where did the 4.8 million in cash come from to purchase this building?
5- If I wanted to build a Catholic Church in a mostly Islam nation would we be welcomed?

Iman move the Mosque and respect the Human race!

August 26, 2010 at 4:17 pm

mike s.

Many Muslim countries have churches. With that said, those are muslim countries. America is not a Christian country, so your reasoning is invalid.

The 4.8 million may come from a terrorist ally, the same terrorist ally that owns part of Fox News (This is according to Fox News). Please watch this video. http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-august-23-2010/the-parent-company-trap?xrs=share_fb

Your media is terrible, and ignorant people believe every word.

August 26, 2010 at 4:56 pm

KPMc

But you’re not in an Islamic nation… or a Christian one… You’re in the United States of America. Home of the free, land of the brave.

How come you don’t object when a Catholic church is built near a school? Or has a school of it’s own? Do you support the systematic molestation of children and it’s cover-up?

No… you believe that not all Catholics are bad. You believe the heinous men who perpetrated unspeakable crimes on TENS of THOUSANDS of children don’t speak for an entire religion. You believe there is both good and bad.

But on this subject you lump all Muslims into one despicable group. I suggest you do some spiritual soul searching before condemning anyone else.

Mimi

it’s interesting to me how they are not asked to account for their funding, association with Hamas, comments favoring Sharia law, and the choice for their garn opening to be on 9/11/2011.
Most of all why they chose the name Cordoba Initiative…
TThey are not accountable to anyone.

Only to cry freedom of religion

August 26, 2010 at 4:17 pm

This is what influences you. Watch the video please. Your media is terrible. The mosque’s association with terrorism, how about Fox News’ association with terrorism. america was founded on tolerance, free speech and freedom of religion, so we should sound so bigoted. I do, however, feel they shouldn’t build it that close to ground zero.

More than 2/3′s of Americans want these Asians, Arab, India FOREIGNERS DEPORTED.

August 26, 2010 at 4:04 pm

Americans themselves are foreigners, who do you think we stole this land from? You have no common sense. Islam had nothing to do w/ 9/11, every faith has radicals. A mosque is the type of building that should be there, a place of worship, a peaceful place. Not some buisness like the rest of NY. Learn about others before you speak so ignorantly.

August 26, 2010 at 4:04 pm

The mayor is a traitor to bend over backwards this way, catering to this group’s agenda which is certainly not a peaceful bridge of tolerence.
Since a large piece of one of the planes crashed through the roof of this building how can it possible be able to be sold to a muslim group when it should be considered part of ground zero?
Am I missing something?
What happened to NEVER FORGET????

August 26, 2010 at 3:55 pm

Madelyn, it’s a sad day when the voice of the mob is looked to for reason. NYC Muslims didn’t attack the City, 60 Muslim families lost people in the attacks, and Muslims are a part of the community. Of course, you have just as much right not like it as they have the right to build wherever they like. That’s called “freedom”

August 26, 2010 at 3:55 pm

Madelyn

I have no issue with mulsims, I have issue with this group using the name Cordoba Iniatiative, knowing what that means, saying will be sharia law compliant, not releasing their financial funding sources, and opening this ceneter 0n 9/11/2011.

I am not buying what they are selling.

Tons of mosques in NYC, why here at this spot?

August 26, 2010 at 3:58 pm

lordpet

Let’s get this Center built already so people can move on to the next wedge issue

August 26, 2010 at 3:50 pm

It;s probably being “fast tracked” because of the construction jobs it might provide. also could be dependent on property values of the surrounding buildings.

there is always an angle to actions like this and you have to follow the money. someone stands to gain from this and it;s probably not islamic worshippers.

August 26, 2010 at 3:48 pm

STAY OUT OF THIS CITY. PERIOD.

August 26, 2010 at 3:47 pm

YEAH DELILAH I AGREE WITH YOU. DAT OUT OF OF THIS CTY & COUNRTY ALL TOGETHER..

August 26, 2010 at 3:54 pm

It is a sad day for this city and this country when the voice of the majority is heard, but completely ignored.
When a group claims peaceful outreach, the reaches out to strab the heart this way, you must ask yourself what the true motive is.
If there is no respect or regard or condieration, there is really little room for any sort of peaceful outreach.
I remain outraged at this progect being given the fast track this way.

August 26, 2010 at 3:39 pm

John andrews

Some of the family members are not opposed to the construction of this. It was not all muslims who decided to bomb the WTC, it was a few extremists.
