NEW YORK (AP) — New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg stole away to Martha’s Vineyard to play golf with the president.

A Bloomberg spokesman said the billionaire mayor was invited to join President Barack Obama and talk about the economy. Obama has been vacationing there.

Friday’s foursome at the Vineyard Golf Club also included White House trip director Marvin Nicholson and Washington powerbroker Vernon Jordan.

Obama and Bloomberg met briefly in the clubhouse before setting out. White House spokesman Reid Cherlin said they did not discuss the Islamic cultural center proposed to be built near the World Trade Center site.

Bloomberg supports the center and Obama has said he believes Muslims have the right to build it.

The mayor is a Republican-turned-independent.
