Long Island Cabbie Charged With Endangering Child

ROOSEVELT, NY (AP / WCBS 880 / CBS 2) – A Long Island cab driver is accused of leaving a 7-year-old boy with special needs alone on a street.

LISTEN: WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall reports

Police say the child’s grandmother put him in the cab in Freeport and asked the cabbie to take him to his Roosevelt home.

Along the way, police say, cabbie Roy Sutherland asked the boy about paying. When the child did not respond, Sutherland allegedly left him standing on a street corner in Freeport and drove off.

Sutherland was arrested two hours later and charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

The incident occurred on Monday afternoon.

The Uniondale resident is scheduled to be arraigned on Oct. 25.

It was not immediately known if he had retained a lawyer.

It is absolutely amazing to me that both parties would actually do this! First of all the parents should not allow for any 7 year old child, let alone a special-needs child, to travel by themselves. Second, the cab driver was simply greedy and his greed got the best of him. I feel for this child!

  • NYC cabbie

I am a cabbie in NYC and that is a poor judgment from both the grandmother and the driver, I would collect the fare from the grandmother and get hisb parents phone number then Drive him. Once he is in my car he is my responsibility. Either take him home or to the police station. That is the law.

I will not be surprised at all if the kid’s family decides to sue.

and why not? if some moron left your kid on an street corner in a bad area, is that ok? if the kid freaked out and ran into the street and was killed by an on coming car, would that be ok? what if he decided to walk home and was lost for days, is the taxi driver not partly responsible, should this type of behavior be ingored? he took the kid as a passenger, he could have said no? people live kids with responsble non-familiy members all the time, sure they vet them, but still if he took the kid as a passenger, he took the responsiblity for gettinghim home.
however, it’s unlikely they would get any money since there doesn’t appear to be any damages.

It just shows the lack of accountability in todays world!! So why is it the cab drivers fault?!! What about the effin Grandmother that put the kid in the cab in the first place!!

    • harriet in queens

There’s lost of blame to go around, people are not to place kids on street corners without an adult, two wrongs don’t make a right. and yes it was wrong to put the kid in a cab by himself,

  • Necio

The cabbie is stupid for taking the child alone in the first place. Why couldn’t the grandmother take the ride too. Is she that cheap and lazy that she couldn’t?

    • harriet in queens

perhaps she couldn’t afford it, as for lazy, what sterotype are you channeling
