N.Y. Judge Lets Widow Access Dead Husband's Sperm

NEW YORK (AP) -- A judge has given a New York City woman permission to harvest sperm from the body of her dead husband.

Victoria Chege, of Manhattan, appealed to the court to allow the procedure after her spouse killed himself Monday in Norwalk, Conn.

She said she doesn't want his death to stand in the way of their desire to start a family.

The request was not unique. Another New York woman made a similar appeal last year.

But this petition had an added twist: Chege said if the procedure was successful, she wouldn't be carrying the baby herself. The sperm would be given to a surrogate who is a family friend.

Doctors say the odds of success are long because of the amount of time that has passed since the man's death.
