Long Island Town Boasts New Hazmat Unit & Building

BABYLON, NY (WCBS 880) - There are 100 specially training men and women inside the new hazmat building in Babylon.

They will spring into action if there is a terrorist attack or another emergency that involves dangerous chemicals.

"If you had a hazmat vehicle traveling on the LIE that turned over, this team could come out with their vehicles that has all the equipment that they need, and they have the training that's necessary to get this done," Babylon Town Supervisor Steve Bellone told WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall. "The fact of the matter is that you can put yourself at risk... if you don't have the right training."

Bellone says he believes this is the first-of-its-kind building and unit in New York state.
