Stories From Main Street: Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – What would you do to make the traffic in your neighborhood safer?

WCBS 880’s Sean Adams reports

In Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn, residents have taken matters into their own hands, literally.

“My group has a radar gun,” Manhattan Beach Community Group president Ira Zalcman told WCBS 880 reporter Sean Adams. “We have a great traffic committee and they come out here periodically to check the speeds of cars, trucks, and buses so we know what we’re seeing.”

Zalcman is on a mission. Last month, a four-year-old boy ran into the street and was killed by a bus. Oriental Boulevard is a mile-long straightaway with just three lights.

Adams asked Zalcam, “The speed limit is 30 miles per hour. What have you seen?”

Zalcam answered, “Personally, 67 on the bike lane.”

He has to hide behind a tree and hold up a radar gun.

“We’ve had people from my traffic committee come out here in lawn chairs – sit here all day and clock people,” says Zalcam.

More lights, stop signs, speed bumps, more enforcement – residents are asking the city for help.

Zalcam says, “We’ve come up with a traffic plan. We’ve come up with documentation. We have hundreds of letters mailed, e-mails. we have a whole stack.”

No, Micheal, I am originally from Russian Grandparents, but very different from todays Russians. Todays Russians in NYC are rude, ignorant, pushy, and try to work the social system to get every penny from govt for free. That is why I dont care that they run over each other in Brighton Beach..

I never seize to be amazed at human jealousy and closed mindedness. Nothing, it will just take one Russian speaking attorney that drives something equally as nice, to file a libel and slander claim based on the agency theory against 1010 for publishing mindless drivel, such as the first comment above.

  3. Michael H. says:

That is an astonishingly xenophobic statement.

I’m sure you’re a descendant of Native Americans, since you’re lashing out at immigrants?
