WikiLeaks’ Assange Fights Extradition To Sweden

LONDON (AP/CBS 2) — A British judge on Tuesday denied bail for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange after he told a London court he intends to fight his extradition to Sweden on sex crime allegations.

Judge Howard Riddle told Assange that he had “substantial grounds” to believe the 39-year-old Australian wouldn’t turn up for subsequent proceedings. He then put Assange into U.K. custody ahead of an extradition hearing.

Assange faces allegations of sex crimes in Sweden. He denies the accusations.

Assange appeared before City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court after turning himself in to Scotland Yard earlier Tuesday to face a Swedish arrest warrant.

The founder of the secret-spilling website was asked whether he understood that he could consent to be extradited to Sweden, where he faces allegations of rape, molestation and unlawful coercion.

Clearing his throat, Assange said: “I understand that and I do not consent.”

Assange denies the allegations, which stem from a visit to Sweden in August. Assange and his lawyers claim the accusations stem from a “dispute over consensual but unprotected sex,” and have said the case has taken on political overtones.

Swedish prosecutor Marianne Ny has rejected those claims.

Actually, Reality, he made himself readily available for questioning well before now. Maybe you should try reading previous articles on the subject before providing input based on falsehoods.

  • Nick

Didn’t this bum say: If you have nothing to hide, it doesn’t matter? So if he has nothing to hide, why fight going back to his home country?

    • Michael H.

      Reading comprehension: FAIL

Assange is Australian. Sweden wants him for bogus sex offense charges.

So you were there with the girl? You know for a fact it didn’t happen? Calling the little girl a lying sl\/t?

Keep fighting Julian !!! Our prayers are with you !!!! Don’t let those government THUGS put you down.

whats the big deal what he posts on the internet anyways. If the world does not understand the government is the most corupt organization in existance people need to wake up. Theres nothing he can post that would not be a surprise. They also want to keep the war an ongoing situation anyways.

Yeah, but did the guy really commit rape? He looks about as gay as one can get. Also he should be able to pick someone up and have a night of fun without having to force someone. Just throwing it out there with the timing of everything.

He has been arrested for telling us the truth.. that’s it. They knew about these “rape” allegations a couple of months ago and never acted on it. Now because he released more informaiton, Interpol wants to arrest him. If I turn out to be wrong (I doubt it), then he should be charged. BUT, I really think this is big brothers way of shutting him up… Mr. Assange is a champion for free speech. He hasn’t released anything that can harm us or anyone else yet and I don’t believe he will. He probably has more common sense then the whole cabinet.. Obama should put him on the payroll..

    • Michael H.

Not only did they never act on the original charges: THEY DROPPED THE CASE. His accuser shopped around for a new prosecutor after the first one dropped the case.

  • Gregg

We can’t belive 100% of what the media produces ! I hope the truth comes out ! Is Assange a reporter or a criminal ? I have yet to read of any one individual that has been phisically harmed as a result of the WikiLeaks releases !

Assange you are the man!! Keep doing what you’re doing. Expose all these motherphvckrers so the world can see who they are.

    • Reality

Actually, Jimmy, if he was a man, he would never had gone into hiding. He is a pu$$y.
