Pay attention to what Brian Cashman says. He’s tired after a long week in Orlando and the beat reporters caught him in a moment of weakness. He actually admitted to us that he made an offer to Cliff Lee’s agent, Darek Braunecker, on Wednesday. The offer is believed to be for 6 years in the $23-25 million dollar range.

Listen as Cashman describes the process of dealing with Braunecker in one of the biggest free agent drives the Yankees have ever pursued…

Cashman would love to be standing next to a smiling Cliff Lee with a jersey and cap at a fancy press conference tomorrow, but it will probably take a little longer than that. Cashman was very open though about how much he’d love to see Lee in pinstripes…

There is also another lefthander the Yankees are eagerly awaiting a decision from. That, of course, is Andy Pettitte. Contemplating retirement more seriously than he ever has before, Pettitte called Cashman Wednesday and the GM detailed that conversation for reporters…

The call that Cashman describes sounds exactly like the aw-shucks Andy Pettitte we’ve come to know and love over the years. I believe, just like Cashman, that Pettitte will eventually put that competitive fire to use one last time. But until he makes that decision, we wait for the lefty—and the other lefty too.
