L.I. Towns On High Alert Following Home Invasions

Stories Of Menacing And Violence Against Women, Kids Emerge

Updated Dec. 16 10:50 a.m.

GREAT NECK, N.Y. (CBS 2) — It was two hours of terror on Long Island.

Homeowners were advised to be vigilant on Wednesday night following a series of violent home invasions.

The search is on for a man suspected of attacking a young child, and two women — in two different towns.

Police were checking in on the Kings Point family where the horrifying home invasions began just before 3 a.m.

Investigators said a 5-year-old girl sleeping near her 1-year-old sister inside the Lighthouse Road home was awakened by a man — an intruder — standing over her bed. He fled without harming the girls. A neighbor too frightened to show her face told CBS 2’s Hazel Sanchez she’s worried her family might be next.

“This is horrendous. This is so scary,” the woman said.

Just 25 minutes later police believe the same man broke through the back door of another home on Lighthouse Road. A 63-year-old woman was startled out bed by the sound of breaking glass. Police said the woman saw the suspect looking at her through a broken window, then he ran away.

“Very creepy. Very creepy. I don’t even know how that could happen,” neighbor Ivy Helstein said.

Helstein said her next-door neighbor’s home on Georgian Lane in Great Neck was struck next. Police said just before 5 a.m. the suspect snuck into the 61-year-old victim’s home.

Investigators said the woman woke up in her second-floor bedroom, with a man putting a knife to her throat.

The victim was able to snatch the knife and chase the suspect away.

“Horrible, horrible. I can’t even imagine that. That’s gotta be the worst thing that can happen to someone. Very frightening,” Helstein said.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic man with a dark complexion, 25 to 30 years old, about 5-foot-10, 200 pounds, with black hair, facial hair, wearing a wool cap, black jacket, blue jeans, and black shoes with silver side buckles.

Residents like Arthur Rose said he feels there’s not much more the residents of his neighborhood could do to protect themselves.

“You have to be careful and you have to be lucky I guess,” Rose said.

All these harmless sheep blairing on about how they’re helpless. A simple tool like a gun never enter into your bony little heads, does it?

Give up the ghost already and just leave your “door” open like you always do anyway. You know you want it, just so that you can later whine about it.

You know I live in great neck and about two weeks ago at 2:30 in the morning i found a hispanic man masturbating on my back porch looking in through my curtains when he saw me he tried to get in we struggled for the door and my bf ended up scaring him off. We reported the incident. I bet its related what are the odds that a similar looking man tried to do the same???

Heni. Call your local precinct and remind them about this report you made, this info can help, and your original report could get over looked.

Your not even safe in your own home anymore ! Crimes and violence abound. Yesterday I read about a 4yr old being mugged ! What is happening to our society ?We need a new peace movement !

    • steve

Need a new peace movement????? Okay Gandhi.. What you need is Smith and Wesson.

    • Ken

We need a new wood-chipper movement. Not a peace movement.

Here in Florida they have “the castle law” where you ARE allowed to shoot an unarmed intruder if they break into your home. Something the liberals in NY/NJ should look at.

Family members better start packing heat.

Everyoen has his constitutional right to bear arms. Guns should not be outlawed. However, we are not necesarilly safe if we own one. If soemoen breaks in to a house, in the middle of the night when the lights are off an dveryoen is sleeping, you don’t have time to go get your gun and shoot someoen. I agree that alarms hould be set, houses and streets should be well lit (that does not mena nothing can happen!). I stll feel terribel for these faimiles., They must feel so traumatic, and I hoep they can get passed theses fears.

@DT NJ does not stop you from owning a gun. You just can’t carry it outside the home except to the shooting range. Just apply for it and go through the background check. Takes a few months but it’s worth it.

  • DT

When are residents of NY/NJ going to wake up and smell the coffee? Situations are only getting worse with unemployment and police layoff. We need to protect our self’s and fight for our constitutional rights to bear arms

Own a gun in great neck? The Nazis had guns, guns are bad, guns are living things that think and act independently.

Most of you are lost sheep !!! Do you have any idea that the Govt has been hijacked. Obama is just a puppet just like Bush was and its for the same people that has just bankrupted America !!!

The media is all controlled by these same people that included all TV channels, newspapers, news media yes fox and cnn are owned by the same people, movies etc…. Obama or McCain would have been the same thing…

Please WAKE UP AMERICA, They are trying every trick in the book to take away our constitution. This country is being destroyed on purpose from within… Mass illegal immigration is no coincidence, its being done on purpose to lower the Majority and to divide and conquer… Its been done for hundreds of years…

We are so close to being taken over, please wake up and be aware. We all need to understand and stick together…

Youtube these vids and wake up ” The Obama Deception ” or ” How zionists divide and Conquer “

You would think that homes in Great Neck & Kings Point would have alarms and bright lights in the event of a break-in. Maybe a dog and an owner with a gun too. I hope they catch this prick.

You can do plenty. Get a shotgun and blow the dirtbag into the next world. Case closed.

  • bob

Well, between this, our brand new local serial killer dumping bodies along Ocean Parkway, and property taxes that’ll give you a nosebleed, I simply cannot imagine why the whole world wouldn’t want to move here.

After the unspeakable horror which was inflicted upon the doctor’s family in CT, this piece of human filth, along with all “home invaders”, needs to be shot dead.
