St. Pat's Unites Many From Around The World

NEW YORK (WCBS 880 / 1010 WINS) – There are many Catholic churches in New York City, but there's only one St. Patrick's Cathedral.

And at Christmas time, it's as special time to go there as any to bring together people from all over the world.

"Well, it's the first part of a Catholic renaissance," said one man from Nigeria.

In addition to its rich history and stunning beauty, some say it's simply their tradition.

"Because it's always a tradition. I come here for Christmas. And every time I come I love to come to St. Patrick's," said one woman from Venezuela.

The enveloping warmth even brought one man from Philippines.

"I'm Catholic. So it's my religious refreshment," he said.

George Pinaros and his wife came from Queens and decided to leave the kids at home.

"It's just a nice tradition. The two of us just come for this private moment. We come every year," Pinaros said.

In the Christmas spirit, Pinaros said he remains hopeful and that there are plenty of things to look forward to in the coming year.

"We're hoping things are turning around with the country. We're hoping everybody's health stays well. Things are looking up," he said.

Another man in attendance was from Australia and echoed Pinaros' optimism.

"It's what it's all about. It's having faith and believing. It's what Christmas is about," he said.

Meanwhile, for Kelly and Mike Jackson, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., spending Christmas at St. Patrick's Cathedral was their first and certainly won't be their last.

"He proposed to me in New York City so we do try to make it here every year for our anniversary, but it's more in the beginning of the month so this is the first time we're here on Christmas day so this is a very special time for both of us," Kelly Jackson said.
