Dad Gets Probation In Day Care Cocaine Case
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- A man whose 4-year-old son took a bag of cocaine to day care is avoiding a prison sentence.
The Star-Ledger of Newark reports that 26-year-old Shaheed Wright pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child and has been sentenced to three years of probation.
The sentence didn't get much attention when it was handed down Dec. 17. But Wright made headlines after the initial incident on Sept. 18, 2009.
That's when his 4-year-old son took a bag of candy to day care with him, thinking it was candy. One girl swallowed a small amount of the drug.
Authorities say the boy said in a videotaped interview that he took the bag of cocaine himself rather than having it given to him.
The boy still lives with Wright.
