FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets kick returner Brad Smith has been chosen the special teams player of the month in the AFC.

Smith, a college quarterback and now in his fifth season as a receiver with the Jets, led the NFL with a 27.5-yard kickoff return average and had one TD during December and January. In Week 15, Smith totaled 140 yards on kickoff returns, including a 97-yard score with the opening kickoff in the Jets’ 22-17 win at Pittsburgh.

Overall, Smith ranked second in the NFL with a 28.6-yard kickoff return average this season, trailing David Reed of Baltimore.
