Report: NYPD Cop To Join Homeland Security Committee

NEW YORK (AP) — An NYPD veteran has been appointed to work as a counterterrorism expert on the House Homeland Security Committee.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Joseph Herbert will join the committee that is chaired by Long Island Republican Peter King.

The 53-year-old NYPD inspector currently heads the department’s Intelligence Operations and Analysis Section.

King said he did not recall another time when a local police official was assigned to such a committee.

The committee has oversight of the Department of Homeland Security.

Herbert joined the department in 1981. He is credited with cracking the Zodiac killer copycat case 15 years ago in which three people were murdered and four others were shot.
