NEW YORK-(CBSNewYork) — The worst of the storm appears to be over in the metro New York City area but parts of eastern Long Island and Connecticut still aren’t out of the woods.

After the snow makes it way out of the Tri-State area the wind will take over and pick up in intensity bringing gusts of up to 35 mph helping to prolong blowing and drifting which could hamper clean up efforts.

On average, total accumulations were 8 to 12 inches but parts of Connecticut saw as much as 22 inches of snowfall. A winter storm warning remains in effect for northern Connecticut until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

WCBS 880 Chief Meteorologist Craig Allen says winds are sticking around and cold temperatures will settle on our area.

Eastern Long Island got socked with a lot of snow. Meteorologists say Centerport got 16.2 inches, the highest amounts in Suffolk County. In neighboring Nassau County, the highest accumulation was in Levittown with 13.2 inches.

Just over nine inches fell on Central Park, and more than 6 inches at Kennedy and LaGuardia airports. Across Westchester County, between 11 and 14 inches fell, with Somers getting the highest amounts. New City, in Rockland County, recorded 10 inches. Carmel, in Putnam County, got 13.5 inches.

The temperature in New York City could reach 31 — which is just below freezing.
